People Are Buying Inside ChatGPT Now. Are You in the Results?

Something quietly changed in how people buy. AI shopping just arrived. Ask ChatGPT for a gift for someone who loves ceramics, and it no longer just lists ideas. It shows real products from real shops and lets you buy one without ever leaving the chat.

This is not a demo. Buying inside ChatGPT is live for shoppers in the US, starting with Etsy sellers and more than a million Shopify merchants, built on an open checkout standard that OpenAI and Stripe released together. The store is moving into the conversation.

Here’s the short version. AI sends fewer clicks than Google, but the people who arrive show up ready to buy, and they go to whoever the AI names. Getting named is the same work as ranking on Google, made to work for AI too.

The buying is moving into ChatGPT

The new feature is called Instant Checkout, and it runs on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open standard OpenAI built with Stripe so any store can plug in. A shopper asks ChatGPT a normal question, sees relevant products from shops that have connected, and can buy on the spot. The results are ranked on relevance, not paid placement, and the merchant still handles the payment and the order with the systems they already use. ChatGPT just carries the conversation from question to purchase.

It is early, and the details are still changing. OpenAI is reportedly moving toward dedicated shop apps inside ChatGPT, alongside or even in place of the one-tap checkout. The direction, though, is not in doubt: people increasingly want to finish the job where they started it, in the chat.

AI is reshaping search, not just shopping

Even if you never sell a product through ChatGPT, this shift touches you, because the same behaviour is reshaping search. AI Overviews, the answer box at the top of Google, now show on more than 40 percent of searches, and over half of them in France. A growing share of people read the AI answer, take the shortlist it gives, and never scroll to the old blue links.

For a service business, that shortlist is everything. When someone asks an assistant for the best bookkeeper in Guelph or a reliable renovator in Kitchener-Waterloo, AI names a few businesses. You want to be one of the names. The channel is different, but the goal is the one you already know: be the option that gets recommended.

AI sends fewer clicks, but they convert better

Here is the part most owners miss. Yes, AI sends fewer visitors to your site. But those visitors are worth far more. Some 2026 tracking suggests people who arrive from AI convert several times more often than a typical Google click, because the AI has already answered their questions before it points them at you.

So this is not only a threat to manage. It is a smaller but higher-value stream of ready-to-buy customers, and it goes to whoever the AI trusts enough to name. That is a race worth being in early, while most of your competitors are still ignoring it.

How to get your business found in AI

The moves are practical, and none of them require a big budget.

  • Say who you are, plainly and consistently. Same business name, address, phone, hours and services on your website, your Google Business Profile and every listing. Mismatched details make AI unsure, and unsure means skipped.
  • Answer the real questions on your own site. What you do, who you help, what it costs, how to start. AI quotes pages that answer questions, so write the page that does.
  • Earn reviews and keep your Google Business Profile complete. AI leans heavily on reputation it can see. Fresh, real reviews do a lot of the choosing for you.
  • Make your facts machine-readable with schema. Structured data spells out your business, your services and, if you sell products, your catalogue, so machines can parse and repeat it correctly.
  • Keep the site fast and clear. When AI does send a click, it lands on your page. A slow or confusing site loses the customer the answer just handed you.

If you sell products, add one more: get your catalogue onto a platform AI already reads, like Shopify, with clean titles, prices and images. That is how you become eligible to appear, and eventually to sell, inside ChatGPT and the AI shopping tools coming after it.

Don’t chase the feature. Build the foundation.

Instant Checkout will change. Some tools will win, others will fade, and the buttons will move. Do not rebuild your business around one of them. The durable move is to be the clearest, most trustworthy, most machine-readable option in your category and your area. That is what wins in Google today, in ChatGPT this year, and in whatever comes next.
