OpenAI just started selling ads inside ChatGPT. If you run a business, that one line should get your attention, because it tells you where customer attention is heading next.
Hereās the short version. AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Googleās AI Overviews are now where a large share of buying research begins, and those answers are starting to carry advertising. But the most valuable position in AI search is not a paid slot. Itās being the business the AI recommends on its own, and that spot is still free. The groundwork to earn it is simple: answer real questions in plain language, keep your business details identical everywhere, collect real reviews, and let AI crawlers read your site.
The shift, in three numbers
As of August 2026, Googleās AI Overviews reach around 2.5 billion people, its dedicated AI Mode has passed a billion monthly users, and ChatGPT crossed a billion active users this year. Then, in late August, OpenAI began rolling ChatGPT ads out across 31 European markets after launching them in the United States.
Translation: the answer is the new front page, and itās starting to sell space on it. Canada is not far behind.
Why the free spot beats the paid one
When someone asks ChatGPT āwhoās the best [trade] in Guelph,ā a paid mention will read like an ad. The name the AI volunteers reads like a recommendation. People trust the second one, for the same reason a referral closes faster than a billboard.
Paid AI placement will have its place. But the businesses that win the next two years are the ones the AI already trusts enough to name for nothing.
Four moves to make this month
- Get into Bing. Bingās index quietly powers both ChatGPT and Perplexity. A free Bing Webmaster Tools account is one of the highest-return twenty minutes youāll spend, and most Ontario businesses still havenāt done it.
- Make your details bulletproof. Same business name, address and phone on your website, your Google Business Profile and every directory. AI cross-checks these, and inconsistency gets you dropped.
- Answer the real question, first. Put a plain, 40-to-60-word answer at the top of your key pages. Thatās the chunk AI lifts and quotes.
- Collect real reviews. Trust signals are how the model decides who is safe to recommend.
Thatās the fast version. Our practical AEO and GEO guide walks through the full playbook, including the schema and content structure that get you cited.
The window is narrowing
Right now, being recommended by AI is mostly a matter of doing the basics well, and most of your competitors havenāt. As AI answers fill with ads, āfree and recommendedā gets more crowded and more expensive to earn. The cheapest time to do this work was last year. The second cheapest is today.
If you want your business named when customers ask AI for a recommendation, thatās exactly the work we do. See how we approach AI search and SEO, or tell us what youāre working on.
